The Tri-State Rose Society of Chattanooga and Cornerstone Bank Present

2008 Tour of Roses

A Self-Guided Tour of Premier Area Rose Gardens benefiting CONTACT of Chattanooga Crisis/helpline 423.266.8228.   Just dial the word CON-TACT

Saturday, May 17 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

Sunday, May 18 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm

Just $5 for the entire tour!  Purchase tickets at any garden gate.

Sponsored by Cornerstone Bank

Normally CONTACT of Chattanooga ’s helpline workers can’t promise you a rose garden.  But now, thanks to Cornerstone Bank and the Tri-State Rose Society of Chattanooga , we can promise you a rose garden with the garden Tour of Roses.

May 17 and 18, you can tip toe through the rose bushes of Chattanooga’s premier rose gardens and get one-on-one tips for growing roses from expert rosarians.

Featured gardens also display perennials, annuals, water features, sculptures and interesting landscape elements - not to mention outstanding views.  Some gardens are located in gated communities, while others are in modest neighborhoods.  But they all have one thing in common – roses – the world’s favorite flower.

We hope that our tour will be an enjoyable experience for you, and that it will inspire you to try your hand at growing roses.

And as you stop and smell the roses, keep in mind why we’re doing this – to benefit CONTACT of Chattanooga Crisis/Helpline (just dial the word CON-TACT).

Visit one garden or all twelve for a donation of $5.  You’ll probably not be able to view them all, so hop onto the tour wherever you wish.  And enjoy the ride!

Soddy-Daisy Gardens

Garden One

Rita and Leon Phillips
1009 Sequoyah Access Road
Soddy-Daisy , Tennessee

One can stroll down the aisles of the Belcher garden and study the varieties, colors and categories of roses.  A retired dentist, Charlie gave up root canals to root roses in his backyard greenhouse.  He readily admits his obsession with roses, and if it were up to him he’d have nothing but roses in his vast garden.  However, Phyllis insists on having some perennials scattered here and there for interest and balance.

General location:  Not far from Memorial Northpark Hospital , just off Hamill Road in Meadow Trace subdivision.

Directions to the Belcher Garden :

Garden One

Ted and Norma Lavender
7208 River Run Drive
Chattanooga Tennessee

Garden Sponsor: Splendid Printing – 2008 Tour of Roses printing sponsor

Ted and Norma Lavender bought the lot next door to their home as a buffer against whatever might be built there in the future.  Then they started clearing some patches of land, and planting a few things here and there.  Now it’s a garden worth exploring with roses, annuals and perennials, including giant hostas.  A pergola, built by tour sponsor Dreamscapes, adds architectural interest.  Bird baths, benches and small sculptures accentuate the space.

*  Go about a mile and take the 3rd right onto River Run Drive (the entrance to Eagle Bluff subdivision).

*  Go straight about a mile.  7208 River Run Drive is on the right as the road forks.

 Garden Two

Helene and Cort Dondero
7428 River Ridge Road
Chattanooga Tennessee

Garden Sponsor: Dreamscapes LLC, landscaping and irrigation

Can you picture a castle, high on a cliff overlooking a vast expanse of water?  You can see it for yourself as Helene and Cort Dondero swing wide their private gates to allow visitors on the property of their home lovingly called Grey Stone Manor.  As you enter the estate, you might think you’ve stepped back in time to 13th century Europe .  The formal gardens, together with architectural elements and a majestic view combine to create a surreal atmosphere.

Directions to the Dondero Garden :

At the front of the Lavender’s home you’ll see Players Court .  Drive up the hill all the way to the end.  You’ll see the castle on the right side.  Park on the street and enter the castle grounds through the garden gate at the cul-de-sac.

  Fort Oglethorpe Area

 Brent & Denise Jennings
140 Coffman Drive
Fort Oglethorpe , Georgia

Garden Sponsor: Holcomb Garden Center – Highway 2A

Brent and Denise Jennings’ colorful rose garden stops traffic as people proceed along Coffman Drive .  They brought only one rose with them when they moved into the house; it was an antique rose bush, which they divided and placed on either side of their driveway.  Then they got infected with the “rose bug” and became frequent customers of their sponsor, Holcomb Garden Center nearby on Hwy. 2A.

General location - Behind the Ft. Oglethorpe Krystal

Directions to the Jennings Garden :

*  Retrace your steps back to I-75 S.

*  Take the Highway 2A exit off I-75 S and turn right.  You’ll pass two of our sponsors -  Windwood Bulk Center on the left (your source for Black Gold Rose Planting Mix) and Holcomb Garden Center on the right.

*  Turn left on Lafayette Road/Highway 27 at the K-Mart.

*Immediately hop into the right lane, because you’ll take a quick right before the Krystal onto Gilbert Dr .

*  You’ll zig-zag to the left and then right again onto Coffman Drive (at the monument).

John and Dianne Skinner
4121 Bennett Road
Chattanooga , Tennessee

Garden Sponsor: The Barn Nursery 4th Ave. exit off I-24 next to The Patio Shop

General location:  close to East Ridge High School

The Skinner garden is a favorite stop on the Tour of Roses.  It is rumored that John’s roses are on steroids because of their size and beauty.  Directly behind their home is a comfortable outdoor room, complete with the sound of trickling water from the picturesque waterfall gracefully descending into a pond.  There are roses everywhere you look in numerous varieties.

Directions:

*  Return to Krystal (stop for a cool one!) and turn left on Lafayette Rd (Hwy 27).

*  Proceed north on Highway 27 about 5 miles until you reach I-24 E.

*  Take I-24E about a mile – (wave at The Barn Nursery as you go by).  Exit 181A toward East Ridge (Hwy. US-41 S) at King’s Lodge.

*  Take the round-about, go through the tunnel and continue on Ringgold Road for a couple miles.  Pass Cornerstone Bank and turn right at light #8 - Tombras Ave.

*  Go to the end at Bennett Road and turn right.

*  Go about a half mile to 4121 Bennett Road .

*  Park across the street at Bennett Road Bible Baptist Church parking lot and be careful crossing the busy street.  Enjoy!

And that’s the end of our tour.  Hopefully you’ll be inspired to run to The Barn Nursery or either one of the Holcomb Garden Centers to stock up on rose bushes.

May the rose – the universal symbol of love, friendship, beauty and peace – inspire you to try your hand at growing roses.  You can do it!
