2009 Miniature Rose Review  BY Cindy Garrett

Best of 04

As in the last few years, there continues to be many new miniature and Miniflora varieties coming on the market.  The new Miniflora varieties are the most numerous .  Here are my comments on some of the newer varieties we have in our garden.

MINIATURES

Aydan  Renee was new for me this year.  The bush was vigorous with a deep pink and a hint of yellow bloom that had good form.

Best of 04 is a striking blend of yellow and red.  I still love this rose even though it will mildew.

Emma Grace was new for me last year.  It is growing well and the orange/yellow blooms have good form.

Eternal Flame was new this year.  Bloom is pink/yellow blend that  looks good and plant grew well too.

Joy was new this year.  Another one that was hard to get so I ordered from Cool Roses.  Lovely soft pink and white blooms are great for exhibition.  Has to be a great one since David Clemons named it after his mother.

Pink-n-Pretty was mislabeled in my garden.  The roses that I have are Mr. Lenard which I do like a lot.

Memphis Bell was new this year with a velvety red/white bloom.  Bush was vigorous but bloom may be too big for a mini.

Renegade was new this year. I was very impressed with the red/white blooms even in 95 degree heat.  Bush was very vigorous.  Another great rose from Robbie Tucker

MINIFLORAS

Aberlady was new for me last year and I really liked it.  It is a beautiful deep yellow, about the same color as Ty.

All American Girl was new for me this year and looks promising.  This is a medium to light pink that has exhibition form.

Baldo Villegas is a red and white blend from Whit Wells. This was new for me this year and has potential to be an outstanding exhibition rose.  Only  drawback is that it mildews.

Caledonia was new last year.  Bush was extremely vigorous and the blooms are light yellow to white.

Edisto was another new rose last year.  Blooms have stunning red blend color but bloom size is more like a miniature than mini-flora.  Bush is vigorous.  Another great rose from Michael Williams.

Equinox is a beautiful orange blend with good form from hybridizer Robbie Tucker.  Jeff put this rose on Fortuniana rootstock and I really enjoyed it this year.  I had some great exhibition blooms.

First Choice was a 2nd year bush.  Bush sprawls like Soroptimist International but has beautiful pink & white exhibition blooms.

Good Ole Mountain Dew was new this year.  Bush was vigorous and mauve blend bloom has lots of petals.  Not sure about exhibition potential.

High Ambition  is a creamy white to light apricot with good exhibition form.  Our bush is weak and the bloom can look washed out in the heat.

Hurricane was new this year.  I was not impressed with this rose until fall.  The yellow/red blooms were beautiful but small for a Miniflora.

Jupiter was a 2nd year bush and blooms have same beautiful coloring as Dr. John Dickman, but they are not of the same quality.

Kiss An Angel Good Morning was new for 2009.  The blooms have nice medium yellow color but not sure about the bloom form.  Bush was a  good grower.

Moonbeam was in its 2nd year.  Bush grew well and bloom is a pretty pink with good form but bloom size is too small for a Miniflora.

Mr Lenard was misnamed in my garden as Pink-n-Pretty.  Bloom is a beautiful pink with exhibition form.  Bush is vigorous.

My Inspiration is a beautiful pink/white bicolor with form similar to Soroptimist International.  Bush has not been very vigorous.

Ricky Hendrick was a 2nd year rose for me.  Looks to be a dependable non-fading deep red with exhibition form and a good growth habit.  Does not fade in the heat

Robin Alonso is a vigorous bush with beautiful red exhibition blooms that do not fade in the heat.  This is my favorite red.

Shameless was a 2nd year rose with a beautiful raspberry/white bloom with beautiful form.  Bush took off in 2nd year.

Shenandoah was a 2nd year plant for me that has beautiful dark red blooms.  Blooms have exhibition form and plant is vigorous.

Sunglow has been around a few years but is an absolutely gorgeous exquisite yellow single.  Definitely the best single with a very appropriate name.

Top Contender is a beautiful pure yellow bloom on a vigorous bush.

Unbridled is my favorite new rose for 2009.  Beautiful cream with pink/coral edge and good exhibition form.  This rose was hard to find so I had to purchase from Cool Roses in Florida.  Fortuniana bush is vigorous.

Whirlaway is the best white mini-flora to date.  It has excellent form and substance.  The blooms will hold forever but it is very very slow to repeat.  The only drawback is that blooms will spot.  I now have six plants of this variety.

Yellow Bird was a new vigorous medium yellow with lots of petals.  Not sure about form.
